Home Education

Along with providing additional support for students in mainstream schools, I also provide home education for those being taught at home. For a variety of reasons, you may find that home-schooling is how you wish to educate your child – maybe the school environment is a negative one, perhaps they have special educational needs that you feel will be better met in a home environment, or maybe your career makes it necessary for you to travel. Whatever your reason for choosing home education, it can be a very rewarding and efficient method of learning. However, some parents may feel less confident in some subjects, or they may feel that as examinations loom nearer, that they would benefit from some professional teaching support.

In the last year, I have provided home-schooling for two families. Both students have made incredible progress. I took on one student when he was somewhat behind at the end of year 4, and he is now ready to begin his GCSEs in year 9. The other student was at an average grade band in year 9 and has now completed both GCSEs at A* and an AFA in Creative Writing, grade A – and has become a published poet!

If you wish to have my support for home-schooling, I would recommend at least 3 or 4 hours a week so that I can tailor lessons to any gaps, teach the set texts and examination technique. Overall, you will find that English doesn’t have to be all hard work and that I will quickly get to know your child, their interests and how to motivate them through the course.

Administration

When it comes to taking exams (if that is your choice) I can help you find a local examination centre where your child can sit the exams. I have experience with exam centres and can guide you through this process.

Wider than the school curriculum

One of the things that disheartens many parents is the current curriculum and how narrow it is. My home-school students are much better read than their contemporaries. As a consequence, they have a much wider vocabulary, and hence, can communicate both on paper and in person with impressive fluency. Below are just some of the texts I have covered (in addition to the set texts they need for examinations).

Other Tutors

Whilst my specialism is in English Language and Literature, I do have some recommendations for other subjects.

Dr Kathryn Loveridge is an excellent teacher of Latin and all things classical! Or, if you need a History tutor, my brother-in-law, Neil Lambert has over 25 years’ experience.

I can recommend Tony Richmond who has a Masters and a PGCE and over 20 years experience teaching all of the Sciences and Maths to GCSE and Maths, Biology and Chemistry to A level.
